HPG and HPBG Survey Data Collection BPS-Statistics of Pemalang Regency

February 15, 2024 | BPS Activities

On the 10-15th of every month, the BPS routinely conducts grain producer price (HPG) surveys and rice price surveys at ricemills (HPBG). These activities aim to collect data on grain prices at the farmer level and rice prices at ricemill. The data of grain and rice prices are very important and strategic because rice is the main food commodity for Indonesian people.

The HPG and HPBG surveys were carried out on a sample basis in two sub-districts with the largest rice farming potential in Pemalang Regency, namely Petarukan Subdistrict and Taman Subdistrict. Apart from asking for prices, BPS also measures the quality of grain and rice samples through water content and void content or broken content, whether they are medium quality, premium or out of quality. Thus, accurate grain and rice price data is obtained according to their quality level.

Price data resulting from this activity is used as an early warning for the government in the context of stabilizing rice prices. Especially in these times, the occurrence of a drought at the end of 2023 resulted in the postponement of the rice planting period, and so on the harvest period. As a result, farmers' stocks of harvested grain are limited. As we know, even though demand is relatively stable, the scarcity of grain stocks causes rice prices to rise. And now, since last week the price of rice has increased. By monitoring the prices of grain and rice, the government will take policies that need to be implemented, for example rice imports. The aim is to ensure that rice stocks are safe from shortages, so that rice prices can return to stability.
